Pocket Axe with spring loaded safety blade guard
No. 2 size Marbles Safety Axe that was patented by Webster Marble on May 24, 1898, no. 604,624. It is the middle of the three different sizes that were produced in this design.
Made between 1900-1915 by Webster Marble. This No.2 Safety Axe has checkered plastic handle grip, this "pocket axe" has a spring loaded safety guard that folds down into the handle. Stamped only with the size No. 2 on the axe head, and marked "Marble - Gladstone, Mich., USA". Has some marks and patina, otherwise good condition for its age.
Webster L. Marble (1854-1930) was an inventor, early outdoorsman, and prolific patent-holder who spent the majority of his life in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. His manufacturing company, now known as simply as Marble Arms, has operated in the town of Gladstone, Michigan since 1898.
